pencil, paper, 52 x 37 cm
pencil, paper, 52 x 37 cm (in light passe - partout); framed in a gilded, handmade "simmler" frame, dimensions: 68 x 52 cm. The name comes from the well-known Warsaw furniture art master Jakub Simmler, who lived in the 18th century. The drawing is dated "1876" and has a not very legible signature.
The drawing is a precise reproduction of a painting by Pierre Mignard (1612-1695) located in the Louvre Museum in Paris. St. Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians, playing the harp accompanied by an angel standing to the left reading a score; in the foreground are musical instruments on the ground; a tambourine, oboe and flute with sheet music books, to the right a viola with bow and an open sheet music book on a table. In the British Museum's collection since 1954 is a copperplate engraving, identical in size to the presented drawing, made by Claude Duflos (1665-1727).
